Kansas entered the Union as a free state on January 29, 1861, following a struggle over its admission that was influenced by the Kansas-Nebraska Act and significant conflict between pro-slavery and anti-slavery factions. This process involved the rejection of a pro-slavery constitution and the acceptance of a free-state constitution. Ultimately, the shifting political climate in Congress allowed Kansas to be admitted as a free state after southern senators had seceded from the Union.
