India's Ganges River, a vital natural resource, is thought to be seriously contaminated. Why has the government been slow in cleanup efforts?

There's nothing a government can do to clean it up as long as 100 million people keep dumping in it, and that will continue until an alien life form spontaneously rises out of its sacred waters some moon-lit night and terrorizes some town's people.

The Indian government has been slow in cleaning up the Ganges River due to factors such as overpopulation, economic constraints, urbanization, cultural significance, lack of enforcement of regulations, and political issues. Cleanup efforts are complicated by the river’s heavy pollution from waste and the importance it holds for millions of people. These challenges create a complex situation that hinders progress in improving the river's health.
