Textile mills provided employment, especially for women and children, during the 19th century but came with poor working conditions and strict living regulations. The experience allowed workers to gain some independence but also sparked social changes within gender roles and labor rights movements. Ultimately, the mills played a crucial role in shaping urban economies and the labor landscape in America.
