Commodore Matthew C. Perry used "Gun Boat" diplomacy to open Japan's ports to the U.S. in 1853. He arrived with a fleet of warships and threatened military action to compel Japanese leaders to negotiate diplomatic relations and trade agreements. The Convention of Kanagawa, signed in 1854, marked the beginning of Japan's engagement with the West.
