Islam spread across the Sahara Desert in the eighth century mainly through Berber traders who established extensive trade routes. This led to economic interactions that facilitated the acceptance of Islam among local West African societies. The process involved both trade and cultural exchanges, which were crucial for the religion's expansion in the region.
