What issue did the Missouri Compromise temporarily settle?

It allowed Missouri and then Maine (which also applied for statehood) to become states. A lot of states were on the edge on wether to admit or not allow a state that allows slavery into the states. In the end - both were admitted and became states. However, Missouri was left as a slave state and Maine was set as a free state.

The Missouri Compromise of 1820 temporarily settled the dispute over the admission of Missouri as a slave state by admitting Maine as a free state, thus maintaining the balance of power in Congress. It also established a line (36°30′) beyond which slavery was prohibited in the territories north of Missouri. However, the compromise only provided a temporary solution to the larger issue of slavery's expansion in the United States.
