In the past 15 years, has America moved closer to or further away from the ideals outlined in the Declaration of Independence?

Throughout history, the most important part of America was freedom to the individual. The declaration of independence also stresses that people have important rights that the government and or other people couldn't take away from them, such as right to privacy, freedom of speech, freedom of press, freedom of religion, freedom to own a gun, etc. Overall conflicts with other countries and mixed opinions in our country have caused some rights to occasionally go astray. Overall I think we are not moving closer nor further.

In the past 15 years, America has grappled with political, social, and economic issues that reflect both progress and challenges regarding the ideals in the Declaration of Independence. Movements for racial justice, equality, and economic rights highlight ongoing tensions around individual liberties and governmental roles. Thus, while there have been strides towards these ideals, significant challenges remain, making it difficult to determine a clear directional shift.
