The James River Colony, known as Jamestown, was funded by the Virginia Company of London, a joint-stock company. This effort was initiated by wealthy merchants in 1606, aiming to settle in America for economic gain and to spread Christianity. Its establishment in 1607 was significant as it marked the first successful permanent English settlement in North America.
