If the atmosphere is like a greenhouse, what parts of it function as the "glass"?

Answer (3)

Greenhouse gases, like methane and carbon dioxide, are reflecting over half of all heat back at the sea level of our planet. So these substances are the "glass". Hope this helps!

If the atmosphere is like a greenhouse, the parts of it that function as the "glass" are greenhouse gases such as water vapor (H₂O), carbon dioxide (CO₂), and methane (CH₄). These gases allow incoming sunlight (short-wave radiation) to pass through the Earth's atmosphere and warm its surface. However, they trap some of the outgoing heat (long-wave infrared radiation) that is radiated from the Earth back towards space, much like the glass in a greenhouse that traps heat to keep the interior warm. This trapping of heat helps to maintain the Earth's temperature at a level that supports life.
This phenomenon, known as the greenhouse effect, is crucial for keeping our planet warm enough for living organisms to survive. Without these naturally occurring greenhouse gases, the average temperature of Earth would be about -18°C, significantly colder than the current average. However, human activities have increased the concentrations of these gases in the atmosphere, enhancing the greenhouse effect and contributing to global warming.

Greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide, methane, and water vapor, function like the glass in a greenhouse by allowing sunlight to enter the atmosphere while trapping some of the heat that radiates back from the Earth. This process is vital for maintaining the Earth's climate. Without greenhouse gases, the Earth would be significantly colder and less hospitable for life.
