There were many technological changes during WWI in regards to military technology. These included developments in tanks, airplanes, ships, flamethrowers, and other weapons. But two of the most important developments were the use of chemical weapons and also the machine gun. The machine gun especially led to the development of trench warfare in WWI because mobile weapons did not advance as much as stationary machine guns and artillery which led to large stalemates in terms of obtaining territory and instead each side sought to dig in and defend their territories through trench warfare.

World War I saw the introduction of new military technologies like machine guns, long-range artillery, aircraft, and submarines, leading to trench warfare and a shift toward total warfare. These advancements made war more lethal, necessitated new tactics, and impacted civilian life, setting a precedent for future conflicts.
New Technologies in World War I
Military technology had advanced significantly by the time of World War I, introducing new weapons and tactics that forever changed the nature of warfare. The industrialization allowed for the mass production of weapons like machine guns, which could unleash devastating rapid fire, and long-range artillery, capable of causing destruction from afar. The use of aircraft provided reconnaissance and a new platform for warfare, while submarines introduced underwater combat to the war arena. The innovations in military technology led to trench warfare, increased defensive capabilities, and ultimately a higher scale of destruction with significant loss of life.
Impact on Warfare
The new technologies made warfare much more lethal and less personal, emphasizing the role of equipment and reducing the importance of individual combat. The capacity to kill numerous targets with a single machine gun burst or artillery shell was unlike anything seen in previous conflicts. These technological advancements resulted in a shift towards what is known as total warfare , engaging not just the military but entire nations into the war effort.
New technology affected every aspect of the conflict from the tactics used in battle to the overall strategy and outcome of the war. The stark increase in firepower and defensive capabilities through new weaponry and the introduction of poison gas made traditional offensive strategies costly in terms of human life and necessitated new approaches to combat.
Legacy of Technological Advancements
The mass casualties and destruction caused by these new technologies highlighted the horrors of modern warfare and set a precedent for the types of weapons and warfare tactics that would be used in future conflicts. The legacy of World War I also included the transformation of global warfare; for the first time in history, wars were no longer restricted to battlefields but involved civilian populations and stretched across continents.
