The West Indies was what the islands are sometimes called to this day, this came from the (false) belief that Columbus has discovered Asia/India.
Columbus called the island San Salvador, in present day the Bahamas
Christopher Columbus explored islands in 1492, including the Bahamas, Hispaniola, and Cuba. He mistakenly believed he had reached Asia, leading to the islands being referred to as the "West Indies." His voyages were significant in initiating European awareness and colonization of the Americas.
