Nicholas Trist successfully negotiated the final terms of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, which ended the U.S.-Mexican War on February 2, 1848. His negotiations resulted in significant territorial gains for the United States. James Polk, the President at the time, appointed Trist for this purpose.
