Must [tex]m[/tex] in the equation [tex]y=mx+b[/tex] always be a positive number?

If the slope of the number is positive (the graph goes upward from left to right), then m will be positive, but if the slope is negative (the graph goes downward from left to right), then m is negative. So, no. M does not have to be a positive number, it may also be negative.

The slope m in the equation y = m x + b can be either positive or negative. It indicates the direction of the line—upward for positive and downward for negative values. Thus, m does not always have to be a positive number.
