Why was Socrates sentenced to death by a jury of Athenian citizens?

Socrates was a critic of democracy, which was Athens' system at the time. Other scholars saw this as political infighting. Socrates also praised Sparta, who was Athens' rival city-state.

Socrates was sentenced to death in 399 BCE by an Athenian jury for impiety and corrupting the youth. His challenging of traditional beliefs and his associations with controversial political figures contributed to his condemnation. Despite his defense, he was convicted and accepted his death sentence, becoming a martyr for philosophy.
