The surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia took place in Appomattox on April 9, 1865.
Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered his army to Union General Ulysses S. Grant. It only lasted a few hours, but effectively broght the four-year Civil War to an end.

It was at the battle of Appomattox, it was one of the last battle during the war and one of the most humiliating for the north. Hope I helped. :)
