Jacques Cartier and Samuel de Champlain both explored Canada in the 16th and 17th centuries. Cartier claimed Canada and explored the St. Lawrence River, while Champlain founded Quebec City and expanded French influence through alliances with Native Americans. Their explorations were pivotal in establishing French presence in North America.
