Work algebraically and show the equations and steps used to get your answers.

A wooden access ramp is being built to reach a platform that sits 30 inches above the floor. The ramp drops 2 inches for every 25 inch run.

A) What is the slope?

B) Find the x-intercept of the graph of your equation.

C) Design requirements stipulate that the maximum run can be 30 feet. Will this ramp meet the requirements?

D) Using a complete sentence, explain the reason for your answer to part (C).

Well, it is 25 − 2 . That is, the equation is y = 25 − 2 x + 30 . The run could be found when y=0, so 25 − 2 + 30 = 0 or 30 = 25 2 x or 750 = 2 x or x = 375 . 375 inches. 30 feet means 360 inches, as far as I remember (in my country only metric systems are being used :) ) so it doesn't really work -- the ramp is just a bit too long.

The slope of the ramp is approximately -0.08. The x-intercept of the ramp's equation is 375 inches. The ramp will not meet the design requirements because its calculated run is 375 inches, which exceeds the maximum run of 360 inches.
