Settlers moved to New Mexico during Manifest Destiny due to rapid population growth, the search for economic opportunities, political pressures, cultural beliefs in spreading democracy, and improvements in transportation. These factors created a compelling case for westward expansion, including into New Mexico. Ultimately, many Americans felt it was their duty to assert control over the West as part of their national identity.
