President Wilson said the world should be safe for democracy as he went before Congress to ask permission to go to war. Up until this time he had tried to avoid the war but when German Subs attacked a US ship, president Wilson said we could no longer avoid being involved in this war.
President Wilson declared war on Germany after growing tensions from unrestricted submarine warfare and the interception of the Zimmermann Telegram. He addressed Congress on April 2, 1917, asking for a declaration of war, which Congress approved on April 6, 1917. This marked the end of U.S. neutrality in World War I.
