In Plessy v. Ferguson , the Supreme Court justices interpreted the 14th Amendment to allow for racial segregation under the doctrine of "separate but equal." They ruled that as long as separate facilities for different races were equal, segregation was constitutional. This decision upheld segregation and discrimination in public policy for many years.
