The Dawes Act of 1887 aimed to assimilate Native Americans by dividing communal lands into individual plots, ultimately transferring much of their land to white settlers. It was introduced by Senator Henry Dawes with the belief that individual land ownership would lead to the adoption of Euro-American agricultural practices. However, it significantly harmed Native American communities and cultures, resulting in a loss of communal identity and significant land loss.
