A group of friends shares the cost of their party. If each pays $42, there is a surplus of $19. If each pays $40, the total is short of $8. How much does the party cost?

If each person pays $2 more and then the difference is 27, then the number of people is 13.5! (Weird I know) 13.5 x 42 = 567 13.5 x 40 = 540
567-19 = 548 540+8 = 548
Therefore the price is $548
