11.\tInteractions with the Europeans brought change to East African society in early modern times. Trade brought access to new food crops, European textiles and metal goods. Slave trade was also prevalent but not as much as in other parts of Africa. Unlike east Africa, European colonization and slavery had a total negative impact on African societies, and led to the long-term impoverishment of south and central Africa and more wealth to colonizers. ;

Colonization in West Africa involved indirect rule and assimilation policies, with heavy ties to the slave trade. Central Africa experienced exploitation under paternalistic Belgian rule. Both regions suffered lasting impacts but maintained vibrant cultural identities.
The European colonization of both West and Central Africa significantly impacted the political and social structures of the regions. In West Africa, the effects of colonization were tightly linked with the Trans-Atlantic slave trade, which heavily influenced local economies and societies. European powers, such as Britain and France, employed different colonization strategies, with the British favoring indirect rule through existing local authorities, whereas the French adopted an assimilationist approach aiming to spread their culture.
In Central Africa, the Belgian colonization of the Congo was characterized by paternalism and exploitation. The Belgians saw Africans as needing Western guidance and education, leading to severe labor demands and exploitation without considering the development of local structures. This markedly contrasts with West Africa, where European powers at least partially integrated with existing political systems.
Both West and Central Africa were deeply transformed by colonization, leading to long-lasting effects on their economic systems, cultural identities, and political structures, which continued to evolve through the post-colonial period marked by civil wars and ongoing political unrest. Despite the challenges, both regions retain rich cultural traditions and values that remain integral to their identities.

West Africa and Central Africa experienced distinct forms of colonization, with West Africa adopting indirect rule and assimilation policies by different European powers, while Central Africa, especially under Belgian rule, faced severe exploitation and paternalism. Both regions suffered economic disruptions and cultural erosion due to colonization, yet they have managed to retain rich cultural identities. The consequences of these colonial practices continue to influence political and social structures in both regions today.
