(a) If M is a metal, then the litmus will turn blue.
Metals typically react with water or acids to form basic solutions (except some like copper, gold, and platinum), which can turn red litmus paper blue. This is because metals form metal hydroxides when they react with water, and these hydroxides are basic in nature.
(b) If M is a non-metal, then the litmus will turn red.
Non-metals often form acidic oxides when they react with water. For example, sulfur dioxide forms sulfurous acid when dissolved in water. These acidic substances turn blue litmus paper red.
(c) If M is a reactive metal, then hydrogen gas (H₂) will be evolved when M reacts with dilute sulphuric acid.
Reactive metals like magnesium, zinc, and iron react with acids to produce hydrogen gas. This reaction can be represented by the general equation: Metal (M) + H 2 SO 4 → Metal Sulfate + H 2 (gas)
(d) If M is a metal, it will form a basic oxide, which will form a basic solution with water.
When metals like sodium or calcium react with oxygen, they form metal oxides such as sodium oxide ( Na 2 O ) or calcium oxide ( CaO ). These metal oxides, when dissolved in water, form basic solutions like sodium hydroxide ( NaOH ) or calcium hydroxide ( Ca(OH) 2 ).
(e) If M is a non-metal, it will not conduct electricity in the form of a solid.
Non-metals generally do not conduct electricity when solid because they lack free-moving charged particles (electrons or ions). For instance, sulfur and carbon (in the form of diamond) are good examples of non-metallic elements that do not conduct electricity when solid.
