The epiphysis of long bones is covered with articular cartilage which functions to reduce joint friction and absorb shock. During growth, the epiphyseal plate is also made of cartilage until it is replaced by bone when growth ceases in adulthood. ;

The area of a long bone covered with cartilage is called the epiphyseal plate, which is essential for bone growth. This plate remains active until the end of puberty, when it becomes ossified, stopping further lengthening of the bone. Proper functioning of the epiphyseal plate is vital for healthy skeletal development.
