"Athens fought alone against Darius's army and decisively defeated the Persians" is by far the best option from the list. This major defeat started a new string of wars with Persia, however.

The correct answer is A: Athens fought alone against Darius's army and decisively defeated the Persians at the Battle of Marathon in 490 BCE. A small Athenian force, motivated to defend their democracy, managed to defeat a much larger Persian army. This victory was pivotal in the Greco-Persian Wars, demonstrating Greek military effectiveness and unity.
