When \(\text{MgCO}_3(s)\) is strongly heated, it produces solid \(\text{MgO}\) as gaseous \(\text{CO}_2\) is driven off.

Does the oxidation number of carbon change upon the formation of \(\text{CO}_2\)?

Answer (1)

MgO + CO_2\uparrow"> M g C O 3 − − T − − > M g O + C O 2 ↑
the oxidation number of carbon in MgCO3 = +IV the oxidation number of carbon in CO2 = +IV
so, there is no change
