Nicholas Trist successfully negotiated the final terms of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo after the Mexican-American War. Signed on February 2, 1848, the treaty led to significant territorial gains for the United States, including parts of modern-day California and New Mexico. The U.S. agreed to pay Mexico $15 million and assume claims against the Mexican government.
