Basically taking water, and then making a different compound react with the water.

Hydrolysis is a chemical reaction where water is used to break a larger molecule into smaller ones. During this process, water is split into hydrogen and hydroxide, which attach to the separated parts of the molecule. Hydrolysis is especially important in biological functions such as digestion, where complex molecules are broken down into simpler compounds.
