Great Britain promised the colonies that they would protect them from attacks by Native Americans, French, or Spanish powers in exchange for exclusive trade. This relationship was central to mercantilist policies, where the colonies provided raw materials and Britain provided defense and manufactured goods. The assurance of protection helped maintain British control, but it also contributed to growing tensions leading to the colonies' push for independence.
