Vietnam was divided into North and South after the Geneva Conference in 1954 due to conflicting ideologies of communism and capitalism. The division was part of the Cold War context and led to a civil conflict known as the Vietnam War. Ultimately, this war resulted in the North gaining control over the South in 1975, unifying the country under a communist government.
