NATO, or the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, is a military alliance formed in 1949 with the aim of providing collective defense against aggression. Originally made up of the United States, Canada, and several Western European countries, NATO's principle of collective defense states that an attack against one member is an attack against all. The organization has since expanded to include nations from Eastern Europe in response to post-Cold War security needs.
